WinFax and Vista/Windows 7 compatibility

Postby Moderator » Thu Sep 06, 2007 12:14 pm

All Microsoft VISTA editions and Microsoft WINDOWS 7* are not compatible with WinFax PRO (all versions). UPDATE: Windows 7 now includes XPM, which is "Windows XP Mode" allowing Windows XP software to run under a Virtual Machine in Windows 7 - compatibility with WinFax PRO in Windows 7/XPM is unknown at this time.

There is no update available for Windows VISTA or Windows 7 compatibility.

WinFax PRO is for use with Windows XP/2003/2000/NT/9x/Me only)

Also x64 versions of XP are also incompatible.

Please do not contact us regarding a Vista Compatible version of WinFax as this product was developed by Symantec and has been discontinued by them.

Why doesn't it work?

The main (and important) component of WinFax (the WinFax fax printer driver) does not install in VISTA or x64 operating systems. Therefore, you can install WinFax but this component will not be installed. Without the fax printer driver, you will not be able to attach or print documents from external applications to be faxed. This will limit you to sending (1 page) cover pages only within WinFax directly.

GetFaxing continues to provide professional third-party support for WinFax PRO software. For more details, see http://www.getfaxing.com/services.htm

Update on Windows XPM with Windows 7:

The Windows XPM is an interesting feature for Windows 7, it allows Windows XP applications to run under the same desktop with Windows 7. Unfortunately, Not all PC's will support the new Windows XP Mode under Windows 7. The processor must support a feature called "hardware virtualization", which is not supported in many Intel & AMD processors.

Please read the following:

Although OEMs have been shipping hardware virtualization in PCs for three years, hardware virtualization is not available in all PCs — so even if your PC is new, it may not have hardware virtualization. Additionally, those PCs with hardware virtualization have it turned off by default, so you will need to turn on the hardware virtualization capability before you can use it.

This BIOS option can also be referred as "Vanderpool Technology"

More info on Microsoft's site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx

A download tool is available to test your processor for both Intel and AMD. Please see Microsoft's site for download links.

Tom's Hardware has a good article on this:

Ed Bott's compiled a list of processors with the VT support.
