WinFax PRO Support

Many of you held off upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista and are considering the upgrade to Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 7 (or even the new Windows 8), but are wondering if many of your existing applications such as WinFax PRO will work.

WinFax PRO and TalkWorks PRO (the fax/voice version of Symantec’s popular fax software) still have a strong user base and many of you don’t want to give up this powerful and easy to use desktop faxing software.

Unfortunately Microsoft Windows 7, along with the upcoming Windows 8 are NOT compatible with WinFax PRO. Read the rest of this entry »

An important update to all WinFax PRO fax users 

UPDATED NEWS : Microsoft releases “ActiveX Killbits” Security Patch for XP February 9th, 2010 (See below)

A security flaw (called a Remote Buffer overflow) with a specific ActiveX Control that is used by WinFax PRO was reported. This type of security flaw is fairly common with ActiveX controls, and effects many programs out there. Recently the same security risks were identified in Facebook & Yahoo Music ActiveX controls. The flaw allows a script (on a Web page that you visit) to execute a program on your computer. At one time, fax/modems were a common hardware item that were bundled with many pre-built PCs.  In an effort for computer manufacturers to reduce prices, and because of the decline of dial-up Internet modem usage, fax/modems are not usually bundled with a computer and must be purchased seperately as an add-on. While dial-up internet still being used, it’s rapidly being replaced by high speed internet service, such as DSL.  The DSL modem that is usually supplied to you when you subscribe uses the high frequency (25 kHz – 1 mHz) of your telephone line for internet service.  The lower frequency (4 khz and below) is used for use for regular telephone calls (voice), fax and data calls.

So the question is, if I have a modem for my DSL connection, I should still be able to send a fax with WinFax, right? Read the rest of this entry »

If you’ve recently upgraded or installed updates for your Windows XP computer that included one or more of the following; Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 7, Service Pack 2, or Service Pack 3, or any Security Updates and you use WinFax (WinFax PRO versions 10, 9, 8 or TalkWorks PRO 2,3), you may have encountered a problem entering fax numbers in a WinFax phonebook. You may have also encountered various problems (dialog boxes disappearing, closing, General Protection Faults) during the installation or setup of WinFax - such as, entering a fax number, an IP address, dialing settings, area codes, passwords, or CSID (Caller Station Identifer). I recently picked up a Magicjack, you might have seen the commercials on television, its a USB device that plugs into your computer that allows you to plug a telephone into it, giving you a dial tone so you can make telephone calls using a regular corded or cordless telephone. The difference is the telephone call is routed via your computer to the Internet, using the Magicjack service. Read the rest of this entry »

Symantec WinFax PRO 10 is the last version of WinFax to be released, it comes in five different revisions, 10.0, 10.01, 10.02, 10.03 and 10.04 (often incorrectly called 10.4). When we troubleshoot a problem with our Remote Technical Support service, the first question we usually ask is what version of WinFax are you using?  Many can’t answer this, or usually answer version 10 when they may have version 10.02, or 10.03.  Our WinFax Tools application (click the WinFax Info button) can tell you immediately the version you have installed, but if you don’t have the product installed, you have to manually check for files on your CD or look at the product box. Symantec quietly discontinued its sales and distribution of WinFax PRO 10 in June of 2006.  A few years after the product has been discontinued there are thousands of WinFax PRO users out there. The reason for the longevity of this product is because there is nothing out there that can can match its capabilities, ease of use, and low price.  While its true that fax isn’t as popular as it once was 10 or more years ago, its still widely used by many businesses and individuals out there.
