I now know how to create the problem in receive folder is loseing logs but dont know how to stop it. everytime I click receive arrow down to show other folders then close it using the arrow that points to the right(looks like a thumbtack) to get bigger view of receive folder it loses 1 old log. The more times you click thumbtack the more it loses. How do I stop it or fix it?

I believe i have seen this problem before. Need to confirm if the problem is data related, or a video screen-driver redraw problem. If you exit WinFax, close the Controller and then re-start Controller and WinFax Message Manager, do the missing log entries re-appear?

Try under SAFE MODE if you can reproduce the problem
if the problem doesn’t occur in SAFE MODE, then it is likely a video related problem.

The article below indicates info on how to check in safe mode. Windows will not load your fax modem in safe mode, so you will not be able to send faxes. The article is specific to Microsoft Office, but it also applies to any application with similar issues.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907349

If you find the problem does not exist in safe mode, then reboot the PC in normal mode and try updating the video drivers for your video card (from the manufacturer of the video card), if no updated drivers exist, then try lowering the screen color depth, 32 bit to 16 bit , or changing the resolution of the screen. You can also try the decreasing the Hardware Acceleration option listed in the artice above.

A first time I ever came across a computer that would not boot up in safe mode like you ask. Tried updating grahic drive a ram128 then it say no adapters so it dont install. today started problem not sending to one fax machine normally do everyday and would not work(NOT EVEN HEAR OTHER FAX MODEM). then I send to another fax machine then after that I could resend to fax that would not work before and work.I have got winfax to receive after getting a time warner phone line and verizon tech came to my house and cant figure out why i can receive with time warner and not theres but could from theres untill dec.1st. I tried to back up winfaxpro on cd but only see messages and not phone book plus i needed to check what i wanted one by one and is time consuming. there must be a way to copy the backup file to cd that simple(im no rocket scientist) can you help?
Also its not been easy to say the least and appreciate any suggestions to get winfaxpro running more right.

Also about missing logs in receive log and updating graphic drivers and computer, this problem exists only with winfaxpro and not anywhere on any other programs or explorer. This has me feeling if I put all my winfaxpro data into another new computer The problem in receive logs will still be there. I am about ready to give up. THIS MAY BE SOMETHING NOBODY CAN FIX?

if it is a data related problem with the log files, then it may be able to be reproduced on another machine. We can check the log for you on a Windows XP machine. You can attach the log files here by uploading the files (there are about 14 of them) in your DATA folder, they would be named in the format: status.wfb status.wfx status2.wfx etc..etc.. about 15 of these types of files. You can attach them here, or zip them up together as a single file (mylog.zip example) and upload it as an attachment with a reply to this message.

note: if you do upload these files, I will be able to see your send and receive log information(after I load it into WinFax) but not the contents of the actual faxes you received/sent. If it is confidential information that appears in your send log/receive log then I suggest not posting it here and email to [email protected] att: review log structure

how often does the fax modem connect to internet , for dial up internet access? does the problem with receiving faxes occur after an internet connection was made?

As for copying backup file, you can copy the entire WinFax folder and all sub-folders (usually c:program filessymantecwinfax for version 10.0 or 10.01, or c:program fileswinfax for newer installs) copy this entire folder to a CD or USB image drive. This copies everything–program files, cover pages, phonebooks, faxes and logs. (Assuming that you set the winfax cover and data paths in this folder–see Wnfax Tools,WinFax info button to determine default data paths)

I have been going on dail up internet daily to coorespond on winfaxpro forum. I have wandered myself if receiving fax becomes a problem after using the modem for internet but have not discovered it yet causing a problem. I had problem also receieving entire pages where it cut off some of the page. I have unchecked 2d compression in modem properties on fax tab and seemed to help some but not all the time. Also NOT able to receive from some fax machines but if I change modem settings from class1 to class 2.0 I can receive from them. Finally in modem properties I see 3com modemPCI ADI#2, before was PCI ADI
I have faxed 15 files you mentioned in the data file to your email to see if your xp repeats this same problem THAT DOES TO 2 COMPUTERS I HAVE TRIED ALREADY.The problem was everytime I click receive arrow down to show other folders then close it using the arrow that points to the right(looks like a thumbtack) to get bigger view of receive folder it loses 1 old log.

I tried the log file structure and could not reproduce any problem with missing log entries. I suggest you try in safe mode to see if the problem continues , or changing the resolution or color depth in Windows 2000.

Since you say using XP machine you tried the log file structure and could not reproduce any problem with missing log entries I want to copy you. I haved backed up the winfax folder on usb thumdrive following your instructions from my windows 2000. Also winfax tools 129 onto usb thumbdrive. I am able to buy XP Computer its a HP Pentium 4 with Service Pack 3(Internal fax modum) with all windows updates. In Winfax tools 129 when clicking fix entry problem it says for use with XP SERVICE PACK 2 OR 3. With winfax tools 129 help what instruction step by step for installing winfax folder from thumbdrive onto XP Service pack 3?

Ok, assuming this new computer is going to have a new installation of WinFax PRO.
and, your USB device has the entire WinFax folder copied. Example: C:Program FilesSymantecWinFax for WinFax PRO 10.01 or lower, and C:Program FilesWinFax or WinFax PRO 10.02 or higher. Since you are using 10.01, the default folder structure will be “Program FilesSymantecWinFax”

on new computer, insert USB device and copy the appropriate folder to the SAME folder structure on the hard drive.
so you now have a folder with all your WInFax data in c:program filesSymantecWinFax. If you only copied the WinFax folder, then you may need to create a Symantec folder first, then copy the WinFax folder under Symantec. If you only copied the DATA folder, then you will need to create a Symantec folder, a WinFax folder, and then copy the DATA folder and its contents underneath WinFax.

Once you have the existing WinFax data copied from the USB device to the hard drive, you can then go ahead with the actual installation of WinFax PRO. Insert CD, start installation. This method will work with version 10.01 or lower, it does not work with 10.02 or 10.03 installs. It may detect you have WinFax data already installed, go ahead and install to the same folder. The default is c:program filessymantecwinfax (for program files) , c:program filessymantecwinfaxdata (for data files) , and c:program filessymantecwinfaxcover (for cover pages)

Once you have successfully installed, configured your modem (and rebooted if required by the setup) you should see all your send receive log structure, your faxes and phonebook(s) in your new setup.

I should also mention that you may need to perform the “Fix Number Entry” steps before you begin the actual installation. It may or may not be necessary, but does not hurt if you do.

I have not bought the xp yet but is my plan later. I am choosing first to get a external serial modem(model 3049C) your first preference of choice for modems with winfaxpro. I feel this may help my send and receive issues the most right now, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I do want to thankyou. I was missing log entries when I click receive arrow down to show other folders then close it using the arrow that points to the right(looks like a thumbtack) and you suggested lowering screen color from 32 to 16 bit. at first there was no change but last night I lowered the color parcels down to 800-600 or 600-800(forgive me I forget exact number) I now cannot reproduce the problem anymore no matter how hard I try. I have tried my computer savy friends but they tried and failed. All in all I want to publically say THANKYOU! I would never had been able to solve this without your help. As I am continuing to expand winfax it is becoming obvious to me without this forum and your support I may not have a job today as I depend on winfaxpro for my work. You have been patient, kind and very professional with me even with my lack of computer knowledge. Giving credit when credit is due I want to say to you: THANKYOU, THANKYOU!!

Good news that issue is resolved! Unfortunately, with an older PC and expired operating system that is no longer supported you don’t get the advantage of being able to update video drivers.
