Close all background tasks and delete temporary files

To close programs (Windows 95, 98, Me):

    1 Press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
3 Select an application and click End Task.
4 Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have eliminated all applications except Explorer and Systray.

To close programs (Windows NT, 2000, XP):

    1 Press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
2 Click the Task Manager tab.
    3 Click the Applications tab.
4 Select an application and click End Task.
5 Repeat step 4 until you have eliminated all applications except Explorer and Systray.

NOTE: Some applications may generate a dialog window indicating that the program is busy or waiting for input. Click End Task on that dialog.

    To delete temporary files:

    1 Close open applications.
    2 Start Windows Explorer.
3 In the Address box, type %temp% and then press Enter.
    4 Click Edit.
    5 Click Select All.
    6 Click Delete.
7 If prompted to confirm deletions, click OK.

then rebuild phonebooks/logs as outlined in these steps
