How do I setup Winfax Pro and my answering machine with only one telephone line. What should be set to pick up first the Winfax Pro or the answeing machine. What number of rings should each be set to. How can Winfax Pro be used with an answering machine when you have only one line.

WinFax won’t work properly with an answering machine since either WinFax or the answering machine will answer the call first.

It’s recommended to have another telephone line for faxing, or if this isn’t possible, you can try the following options:

1. use a feature called distinctive ring, but it doesn’t work with all modems and operating systems. In addition, you would have to order this service from your telephone company.

2. use a telephone/fax switch box, (sometimes called a Comshare). This will allow you to use both fax and voice on the same telephone line. It is a hardware device which you need to plug your answering machine and fax modem to.
