do you have a software based (also known as WinModem) type modem?
these types of modems use the PCs processor to send/receive faxes, so if your using your computer for other things at the time they can easily fail when trying to send and receive faxes. If you open and close a lot of apps during the day, I’d recommend a reboot at least once a day.

yes, providing the configuration is correct you can configure 2 modems (external recommended using com ports — not USB), if internal, they should be hardware based modems (avoid software driven modems, and never use two software modems in the same system)
for more info on fax modems, visit http://www.modemsite.com
and WinModems, soft modems info here:
    http://www.modemsite.com/56k/winmodems.asp
These modems in most cases are fine for sending the occasional fax, but not for volume faxing. Avoid them if you can.

Client and workstations must be using the same version of WinFax PRO (all updated from 10.03 to 10.04 recommended if using Windows XP SP2, otherwise, 10.03 is OK.)

You can use in mixed environment using v10.03 (or lower), however, if some of the machines are Windows XP SP2 then you’ll need to perform steps on the Windows XP SP2 machines to configure fax sharing (see Symantec’s document on Fax Sharing and Windows XP SP 2).. you can have a Win 98 machine as Fax HOST , and Win XP SP2 as clients.

before you attempt all this, I’d recommend running both systems side by side so that way you have your existing system incase things don’t go as planned.

    Uninstall information for WinFax PRO

if you followed the instructions to remove WinFax manually, then you’ll still see the entry under “Add / Remove Programs”.

This Microsoft document tells you how to remove entries in the Add/Remove Programs list that no longer should be listed there (this is after you performed a manual uninstall of a program)

You can try the troubleshooting steps listed on the main WinFax Software support page (del temp files etc., rebuilding phonebooks & logs)

As for your second question, off peak really doesn’t work too well in WinFax. If you have any faxes that failed (or no answer) in the group send, then they will continue to fax after off-peak time has passed.

Here is a document from Symantec regarding this issue (read the Notes part for the real details on this)
Faxes send after scheduled off-peak time

You need to ensure that the new install is in the same location as the old (previous) install. It looks like you may have installed in both a SymantecWinFax and WinFax directory under Program Files. Depending on the version of WinFax you install, the default could be C:PROGRAM FILESWINFAX or C:PROGRAM FILESSYMANTECWINFAX. This is something to check.

If everything else fails, You might want to submit your backup archive for premium WinFax support. Might be able to recover your files…

what “folder” list are you referring to?
it looks like your data is in two different directories. When you reinstall, you’ve probably only created the one directory and are missing the other.

assuming you’ve followed the steps above to turn off the WinFax Service, do the following:

    1. close down WinFax PRO controller, and message manager if open. I recommend you reboot Windows.
    2. When Windows starts again, double click WTNSETUP.EXE from the WINFAX directory. This will re-run the setup process. Go through the options, selecting the default (or the options you want)
    3. Once completed, start Microsoft Word. Click on Tools, Options, Print. Turn off (uncheck) Background printing. Click Ok. Exit Word.
    4. Start the WinFax PRO controller and try again to print to the WinFax PRO printer driver from any application (such as Word)

    check this topic

I am not sure Symantec’s official response to this now because this was posted several months ago.

Here is what I would try first:

    1. In WinFax Setup, go to “Call Status and Controller” option.
Disable *uncheck* the option “Allow sending and receiving when logged off” option.
    click Apply, then OK.
Exit the WinFax Controller if it is active (right click the yellow icon in the system tray and Exit)

    2. The WinFax Service (for Windows XP/2000/NT only)

The WinFax Service answers calls when Windows is logged off. If you are using Windows NT/2000/XP, you should also turn off the WinFax Service. This can be done in the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. (You can also do this by clicking START, RUN and typing SERVICES.MSC and click Run.)

Locate the “TalkWorks PRO” or “WinFax PRO” service, double-click and change the startup setting from “Automatic” setting to “Manual”. Also click on STOP to stop the service. Reboot the computer and then go back to the Services in the Control Panel and verify that the WinFax or TalkWorks service is set to “Manual” and is NOT started.

Note: You can turn this back to Automatic after you’ve resolved any problems with WinFax if you want to receive or send faxes while the computer is logged off in Windows XP/2000/NT.

I DON’T RECOMMEND to use this feature with WinFax PRO 10.02 and Windows XP.

Now, Start WinFax PRO controller first and try to see if you can print to the WinFax PRO printer driver correctly.

Personally, I would avoid 10.02 with Windows XP. Either get 10.03 or downgrade to version 10.0 or 10.01 (only available with a patch from 10.0.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who only have version 10.02 and don’t have the option of moving to 10.03 or 10.0 because Symantec is no longer supporting the product. (I am not sure if they are still allowing free downloads of a full install of 10.03, this is something you should at least try to obtain from Symantec support.)

I am in the process of writing a document on the best configuration for WinFax PRO 10.02 and Windows XP (Sp1 or 2)
and I will post it shortly. Hope it will at least help you get WinFax PRO 10.02 to work reliabily in Windows XP.

Ok, yes, the first solution doesn’t always work (because the file is not in your startup folder) that is why I included the 2nd solution.

ok, if it goes through all the steps properly and then asks you to reboot (and if when you do, it goes through all the steps again) then you need to follow the instructions I posted above regarding removing the configuration wizard from the startup folder, or the 2nd step on removing WTNSETUP from starting when Windows starts.

Ok I just restarted the CPU to see what it says and it says winfax pro setup everytime at startup.. And it wants me to put in the fax # and information. I do it everytime!!! How can I get around this! Thank you!

Does it allow you to enter a fax number/CSID and continue wit hthe install by checking modems , etc?
or does it quit immediately after entering a CSID/Fax Number. If it does quit, then you need to read the topic
“WinFax PRO hangs when entering Phone Numbers, CSID, IP Addresses” etc. to solve this problem.
