Even with “Set Default Fax View,” WinFax would crash due to those bad faxes, so I had to resort to your alternative method. I am happy to report that I am now free of those bad faxes and can access the Receive Log without WinFax crashing.

I want to thank you for all your help and your informative, detailed instructions as to how to fix the problem. It has been a learning experience and is much appreciated.

Sadly, my trusty Practical Peripherals 14400 FXSA modem may be the source of the issues I’ve been having with version 10.03, although it worked fine for versions 10.0 and 10.1. I took the Practical Peripherals modem out of the equation, and recruited my old Courier V.Everything, which was recognized by Win XP (the PP modem wasn’t) and was set up in WinFax as a TAPI modem using Class 1. The USR modem sent and received faxes without a problem.

I think you were also right about the WinFax program experiencing a General Protection Fault related to the [bad] faxes received by the PP modem when it was in Class 2. The question now is, how do I delete the bad faxes? When I try to delete them within WinFax, WinFax crashes. I guess I’m going to have to hunt them down via Windows Explorer and delete them there. I have the date and time of the corrupt received-faxes, but I don’t know what directory they’re in and what their associated file names would be in order to find them for deletion. If you agree that that is how I will need to proceed, would you please give me a roadmap to find those files.

If you have an easier method for deleting those bad faxes, I eagerly await for your instructions.

    Thanks for all your help.

Oh, OK. That sounds like a functional solution.

    Thanks.

Is there any harm in leaving the modem set as Class 2 TAPI (rather than Class 1)? Test faxes are successfully received with those settings. BUT, what can I do about the General Protection Fault I now get when trying to access anything in the Receive log? Could SymDiag help?

I followed your instructions and viewed every cover sheet via Go, Cover Pages. Alas, the image associated with 77.TIF (a long-bearded man behind a desk with the long beard extending out from under the desk) was not among them. What I did discover though, is that I have many duplicate cartoon cover pages, located under different categories and sometimes with different file names (sometimes the same file name, but in lowercase and also in uppercase). I also noticed that I am missing one of my favorite cartoon cover pages, the one that has Someone under the covers. I have file names claiming to be that cartoon, but the wrong cartoon displays. I guess my cover page database got corrupted somehow.

Is there some source from which I can download the correct cartoon for the file description Cover sheet (with someone under the covers!)?

Is there anything else I can try to get rid of the G: drive 77.TIFF errant backup log entry?

    Thanks for all your help.

The modem is listed as a Standard 14400 modem. My previous settings (for 10.0 and 10.01) had the modem on COM3 and set as TAPI. I have also tried it set as COM3, but that was worse than having it set as TAPI. The modem was working successfully in Win XP with the earlier versions of WinFax PRO (10.0 and 10.01); I don’t know what changed with 10.03 that it is now acting so persnickety.

I was finally able to reset the modem with the shift procedure, but the only change that has been observed in Class 1 is receiving a fax made it past Answering, but then stuck at Connecting without proceeding. Set to Class 2, the fax was received, but I still can’t access the new messages in the Receive Log without a fault shutting down the whole program. Also, despite being set to anwser after 2 rings, it seems like the modem is answering after 1 ring.

I’m surprised that the upgrade to 10.03 has been so troublesome. Since it was supposed to be compatible with Win XP I was hoping for an easy upgrade. What do you suggest I try next?

    Thanks in advance.

It appears that in my Cover folder I have a collection of hundreds of *.TIF, *.CVP, and *.WMF files. I don’t know of a way to find which, if any, .CVP or .WMF file corresponds to the 77.TIF file that is causing the backup error. Can you suggest a way to quickly serially preview each file in the Cover directory until I recognize the cartoon that corresponds to 77.TIF (a copy of which I have attempted to attach to this message)?

I’m using a dedicated POTS line.

With the exception of turning off the 2D Compression, those are the exact settings I already have. It didn’t help. Does it matter which “location” is chosen for the active device, e.g., Default vs. Dial as entered. Those are the only choices currently available from the drop down menu.

As for the SHIFT key technique, I must be doing something wrong because I’m not being given the option to configure the Fax Modem; but I have previously removed and added the modem multiple times, to no avail.

    What next?

I found which cover page it is, but I don’t know that I have the Cover Page Designer program installed on my hard drive. If it is, I can’t find it; it’s not given as an option via the Programs, WinFax PRO menu. Is there another way to get it to stop referencing a removable drive?

When I click on the .TIF file in Windows Explorer, the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer displays it full page, but I don’t see any way to change the errant drive designation from there.

Actually, the backup log shows that it also already exists on the C: drive, but I will try your suggestion to see if I can eliminate the reference to a G: drive.

    Thanks.

Addendum: The error message I receive when trying to access the new received messages via right-clicking the system tray icon is:
A General Protection Fault has occurred….

    WinFaxPRO Viewer – 1401001.fxr:wfxctl32.exe – Application Error
The instruction at “0x1010f703” referenced memory at “0x049c0b80.” The memory could not be “read.”

The only changes I get when trying to access a different new received message is the *.fxr number, and the referenced memory location.

Does this information help with a diagnosis and a course of corrective action?

I believe that’s what I tried to do in the past (many months ago), but when I recently opened the Saved Send and Saved Receive folders within WinFax, much to my shock and dismay, I got a message saying those folders were empty! I don’t know what I did wrong, nor do I remember to what directory I moved my old faxes, though I suspect it was a directory named WinFaxSave.

After first renaming my current WinFax Data file, I was able to copy and rename some of the DATAOLD folders (one at a time) to Data in my WinFax directory and the old faxes contained within were then accessible. Can I consolidate the multiple WinFax-related Data, DATAOLD, and Old folders and have them accessible in Saved folders accessible within WinFax? If so, would you be so kind as to walk me through it in baby steps. My head started spinning trying to follow the Users’ Guide instructions you posted. ;(

Mystery solved (I think) — by mixing and matching 2 different external modems (Practical Peripherals [aka, Standard 14400] and U.S. Robotics V.Everything) with 2 different Serial–>USB adapters, I was able to deduce that the COM3-adapter had a Receive problem no matter which modem was used; each of the modems Sent and Received faxes properly when connected via the other Serial–>USB adapter (associated with COM6). TAPI was the correct setting to use for the Active default-location modem.

In case you’re wondering why I prefer using the old Practical Peripherals PM14400FXSA instead of the [plug-and-play] U.S. Robotics V.Everything, it’s because this model of Practical Peripherals fax/modem displays scrolling messages rather than blinking LEDs to depict the status of transmissions. Also, I recall that in the past U.S. Robotics fax/modems had a problem communicating with certain other brands of fax/modems. I don’t know if that’s still the case.

I’m awaiting delivery of a Serial port PCI card to use instead of a Serial–>USB adapter since you WinFax experts seem to think Serial–>USB adapters can be problematic. Can’t a Serial port PCI card fail over time as well?

    Thanks for all your help.

OK, at least now I’m back to where I started — Standard 14400 on COM3 is the Active default location modem; I can once again send faxes but, receiving a fax still disconnects at Answering. [Note: When set as TAPI, receiving a fax locks-up the computer at Answering]

I have ordered a serial port PCI card just in case but, previously the Serial–>USB adapter configuration worked fine.

    What should I try next?
