If you are upgrading to Windows Vista then you are advised to purchase either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate and use Windows Fax and Scan. This way you get an integrated fax program that is very flexible. Microsoft has made major improvements to the program and, for that reason, is only including it in premium versions of Vista. If you have a lower version of Vista you can upgrade to Ultimate or Business without uninstalling your current Vista product

With older fax programs it looks like Microsoft changed the coding with Vista and fax capture drivers for older fax programs won’t install.

If you are still frustrated and are looking for another 3rd party software choice I would recommend FaxTalk. They tell me that they are close to releasing a Vista-capable version. This is the best of the available 3rd party fax programs out there. Phone Tools and Winfax have bitten the dust. Contact FaxTalk Support for information on their Vista release schedule.

VentaFax is not necessarily a good choice if you are looking for the functionality of Winfax. I would better recommend Fax Tools eXPert or FaxTalk FaxCenter Pro. As far as importing Winfax items I would first determine if you really need them. This program is dead. If you decide you really need them kept then find an old computer that doesn’t have a dial-up connection, is otherwise clean of 3rd party software (reformatted with a clean installation of Windows) and install the Winfax and copy over the accompanying database to it. So long as you are using WinFax 10.03 there should be no real issues if there is no other 3rd party software on it and it doesn’t have internet access. This way you don’t have to worry about Microsoft fixes and service packs and 3rd party software breaking the Winfax.

I have run the gammut. I have tried BMP & TIF files, tried converting them using other software, etc. I don’t know why this is such an issue with fax software. I have tried a ton of different software to find one that does greyscale but with no success except for BVRP’s Phone Tools using the logo management feature only. Fax machines galore support greyscale. I find this all very frustrating. And now with Winfax gone there are only 2 companies that make fax software that is usuable…Avanquest/BVRP and FaxTalk.
