I’m working on troubleshooting an install of WinFAX Pro 9 for a friend. What’s happening is that WinFAX is taking far too long to actually answer the fax line after it detects the first ring.

There doesn’t seem to be any real problems with the host WinFAX is installed on (Celeron 400/Win98) or the modem installed (Diamond MM SupraExpress 336i PnP Voice). But in every test I’ve run the receive dialogue takes about four rings to load (it starts loading just after the fist ring, and is up by the end of the fourth), and then sits and spends about three rings configuring the faxmodem to receive the transmission so that it answers just after the seventh ring by which point most fax machines have given up ringing.

You might want to try setting this modem to Class 1 or Class 2 (if it is already set to class 1)
you can do this in the WinFax PRO modem setup
