problems with faxes being stuck in the outbox has directed me to rebuild logs via the maintenance utility. However, upon selecting this utility, a “symdiag.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close” error is constantly being caused despite computer reboot.

    1. How is this symdiag.exe error resolved?
    2. According to the Symantec documentation, the winfax service must first be stopped. How is it stopped?

You can try starting symdiag.exe from the WinFax installation folder instead of from within the WinFax program.

To view all Windows Services , click Start, Run, type “services.msc”
This will open the Services applet.
Find the WinFax Service from the list, then you can Stop it & Disable it here.

    thanks for your reply.

error persists even when started from winfax folder rather than within the application.

Are you attempting to perform a rebuild using Symdiag? You can skip Symdiag and start the rebuild process manually, follow these steps:

    http://service1.symantec.com/support/faxprod.nsf/docid/2000031014390704

make sure you shut down WinFax Controller, WinFax Message Manager and the WinFax Service (if it is active) first before attempting to rebuild the logs. Failure to do this could prevent the rebuild from working, or worse, cause a corruption in the send/receive logs.

WinFax Tools also has the ability to perform a rebuild under “Logs & Phonebooks”. It takes care of shutting down the service, and WinFax for you before it attempts the rebuild.

    thanks for all your help

do you have any suggestions for the problem of faxes getting stuck in the oubox repeatedly after short durations of winfax working properly (after repeated logs rebuilds)?

the faxes get stuck because of some failure of WinFax. If your system crashes (or WinFax crashes) during operating of WinFax then this could cause the logs to fail, preventing faxes from going out. A rebuild usually corrects this issue. Preventing the failure of the log is the solution, but what is causing the failure is unknown.
