Troubleshooting FaxTalk fax modem initialization error messages.

Modem initialization errors are usually the result of a problem with communicating with the fax modem. If this is a temporary problem, the solution is to reboot the computer (a full power down cycle is recommended). The fax modem must be properly configured. Also, ensure the settings in FaxTalk are correct. Otherwise, you will see a modem initialization error message.  We recommend checking that Windows properly detects the fax modem. Perform a Modem Query from Control Panel, Phone & Modem, Diagnostics Tab. Do this before troubleshooting a fax modem problem with FaxTalk.

Error -1: Required FaxTalk startup applications are not loaded or installed.

  • A required program for FaxTalk is not loaded or was disabled at startup. Try rebooting the computer so the proper services are loaded automatically.

  • An uninstall and reinstall of FaxTalk may be required if a reboot does not correct this issue.

Error 3: The fax modem could not be initialized.

  • Modem in use by another application. (Other software is using the modem via a direct connection, non-TAPI compliant mode, check for other software such as Windows Fax and Scan service.)
  • Modem initialization string is incorrect and causing a return error message.
  • Com port or IRQ conflicts are preventing the modem from communicating with the software.
  • An incorrect voice driver has been selected or a voice driver is selected but the modem does not support voice capabilities.
  • Incorrect, changed, or no longer properly configured modem setup in FaxTalk. See Tools, Settings, Modem to reconfigure the fax modem. Select the modem from list and click Change to reconfigure the modem
  • If using a USB Modem, it may have entered a power saving state. (USB power saving mode) – check your Windows power saving options and disable any USB power saving mode.
  • If using a USB Modem, insert USB Modem into a USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 port and directly to a USB port on the computer (avoid self-powered or powered USB hub connections). Connecting to a USB 3.0 (blue USB port) could cause erratic behavior with some USB fax modems.
  • Power Saving Mode settings in Windows have turned off the fax modem and FaxTalk could not detect it – Try disabling any power saving mode in Windows.
