check to ensure your call is actually being dialed and answered by a remote fax machine. The “negotiating..” message can also appear when a recorded voice answers, so this doesn’t always indicate that a remote fax actually answered the call. Make sure you have the volume turned up on the fax modem if it is external, or turned on in the WinFax settings (if internal)

if you’ve determined the modem has dialed out properly, and a remote fax has answered on the other side you then need to check if you are using a long distance service provider. Some long distance (low cost long distance) providers route your call via a VoIP connection. This is usually acceptable for voice calls, but fails for faxing. Is the long distance service you are using acceptable for faxing? If your phone is VoIP (like Vonage) you may need to adjust settings for optium fax usage. There is no guarantee that you can send or receive faxes with VoIP phone services.

If you have DSL high speed internet service, you may require a filter to be added to your fax modem. Your isp can tell you if you require a filter for all your telephones, this also is required for fax modems and telephone answering machines. Filters are usually supplied by your ISP or can be purchased from them .

The other check is to try more than one fax number, you could be experiencing a problem with a specific fax number. Try a few different numbers if you can. If the result is the same for long distance only, then it may point to the long distance service you are using.

Let me know if that workaround improves the situation, doesn’t make a difference, or makes it worse 😐

if the error is program specific then you would have to see if there are any special printing features that are available to this program. For example, Microsoft Word has a option called “Background printing”. Its used to speed up printing time, but in some cases can cause problems in WinFax.

I have no experience with QuoteWerks, but a quick look at their Web site indicates they have (or had) a API link to WinFax. Does QuoteWerks automatically fill in the recipient name & fax number into the WinFax Send dialog?

You can try this alternative method of sending a fax (this works with any application)

    1. open the send dialog box in WinFax. (Send dialog open, waiting with no documents printed)
    2. print the document in QuoteWerks to the WinFax printer.
    3. document should appear in send dialog. (you can repeat step 2 for other print jobs, or from other applications)
    4. fill in recipient details in send dialog.
    5. send fax.

the extra step here is opening WinFax send dialog first, instead of allowing the print driver to open the send dialog. If there is a possible timing issue, the send dialog is already open and waiting for the print job from QuoteWerks.

The printer drivers for WinFax do not install in Windows 7. They will not install because the WinFax printer drivers are designed on an older NT based “kernel” printer driver (type 2 driver). These types of drivers have been discontinued by Microsoft around the time that Windows XP was released (2001). As it takes time to move people to newer technologies, Microsoft allowed type 2 drivers to be installed in Windows XP , and continued to allow Type 2 printer drivers to install in Windows 2003 by way of a policy change. This gave enough time for developers to release newer drivers that would work with future operating systems.

With the release of Microsoft Vista, Microsoft blocked Type 2 printer drivers completely. This has not changed with Windows 7. Type 2 printer drivers are not allowed, and Symantec never designed a type 3 printer driver for WinFax since they never planned on upgrading the software.

Windows XP Mode under Windows 7 works, but the printer driver can’t be used in Windows 7. While this could be to some benefit to some people, its not an ideal solution to use WinFax as its drivers are only visible to Windows XP applications installed in the Virtual Windows XP machine.

its likely that fax is corrupted , I would suggest trying to delete it by “dragging & dropping” it into the Wastebasket folder.

If WinFax crashes when you click on it, then you will need to run WinFax Tools, and click on “Set Default View” option. This will turn off the preview of faxes in your logs. Sometimes if a fax is corrupt, just attempting to display a thumbnail or preview of a fax will cause WinFax to crash.

ok, the file dates are all correct for your version of WinFax.

There could be a timing issue on how the printer information is being sent to WinFax (or how WinFax is interpreting that information). It causes some pages to be missed, and in some cases, causes the lock up in the WinFax Send dialog.

Its difficult to determine if this is specific to the program you are using, or just WinFax not being able to handle this type of print job properly.

At this time we haven’t been able to determine the exact cause of what you are describing. We do know it does cause the failure that “No Pages Fix” will repair.

what version of WinFax? and ACT! ?

you may have to unlink the phonebook from within ACT! (I believe this is in Edit, Preferences, WinFax Tab), and then try to link it back again.

This is an uncommon error message, A Host is enabled but no name has been entered in the Windows registry.

You need to either turn off the Host,or select/enter a host name. This can happen because of a partial install/uninstall with left over settings in the Windows registry.

    Check the following:

In Program Settings, Fax Sharing Host – to set up the Host / turn off the host.
In Program Settings, Modems and Communications Devices – uncheck WinFax PRO Fax Sharing option if active.

If you are actually using a Host, then just make sure you’ve enabled “Fax Sharing Host” options. This will recreate the necessary registry key with the proper values.

or, in WinFax Tools, Setup & Install Tools, click “Enable/Disable Host” button.

    Try the following:

Delete the WinFax printer from Control Panel.
Delete the WinFax (photo quality) printer from Control Panel.
End All WinFax Tasks in WinFax Tools. Yes to end port starter.
    Close WinFax Tools.

Click Start, Run, type NET STOP SPOOLER

Manually locate and delete the following WinFax printer related driver Files:

Delete these files if they exist:

    windowssystem32spooldriversw32x862wfxdnt40.dll
    windowssystem32spooldriversw32x862wfxdnthq.dll
    windowssystem32spooldriversw32x862wfxunt40.dll

    windowssystem32spooldriversw32x86wfxdnt40.dll
    windowssystem32spooldriversw32x86wfxdnthq.dll
    windowssystem32spooldriversw32x86wfxunt40.dll

    windowssystem32spoolprtprocsw32x86wfxpnt40.dll

DO NOT remove the winfax.fad files in both these folders.

if any of the above files report that it cannot be deleted because it is in use, you need to leave those files as-is, delete the ones that can be removed and then reboot the computer and go back and delete the files that could not be removed previously.

Click Start, Run, type NET START SPOOLER
    Start WinFax Tools.
Click on Install & Setup Tools
    Click on Install Printer Driver.
Verify both printer drivers are installed in Control Panel, Printers. (Show Printers)
    Click Start Controller.
Attempt test page on WinFax & WinFax (Photo Quality) printer drivers.

I don’t see anything out of the ordinary here, although you can try setting another printer (such as the HP Laserjet 1200) as the default printer. Right-click, Select Set As Default.

Then, delete the “WinFax” printer (select printer, right-click, Delete).
Go to WinFax Tools, Install & Setup, Install Printer Driver.

Check the WinFax printer properties, Advanced Tab. Do your settings match these?
Click on the Print Processor button, does “wfxprint” appear in the list?

how many printers do you have installed (total) ? and do you have a default printer selection? if so, what is it?

That may be an unrelated error to the printer driver, you’ll have to force the error message again by printing a test page, then go back to the Event Viewer and see if there any error reported for the time you printed the test page.

What (if any) appears in your Event Viewer?

    Start Controller.
    Click on Show Printers.
    Print a Test Page.
Click on Services/Event Viewer/DCOM button in WinFax Tools.
    Click Event Viewer.
    Click on System.
You should see Error or Warning message regarding WinFax Printer. What is displayed here?

If this fails, then the default data “Messaggi” folder is corrupt and is beyond repair. The default folder “Messaggi” should not be used for long term storage of your faxes, and you should move your data to a new message store.
